Powered Vehicle (Team Project)
Purpose
The Powered Vehicle project was to get students to experience fully planning, designing and then manufacturing the project and strengthen communication between peers, client, and machine personal. The vehicle was powered by a Makita XFD12R drill and required to pull 450 lbs (204 kg), excluding the weight of the vehicle, up a 6 degree hill for 120 ft.
Procedure
The team spent the first month of the semester planning the vehicle. The entire vehicle was designed in SolidWorks and FEA was done on the analysis. After passing the manufacturing review (set by Professors), parts were ordered and manufacturing and assembly has started. The manufacturing process took place in the Idea Forge at the University of Colorado and each part was manufactured by one of the team members. A complete and full drawing of each part had to be brought in order to machine any part. After machining all parts, welding also took place in the Idea Forge. Finally, everything was assembled and put together.
Results
Our vehicle did extremely well during the day of the race. We held the title of the strongest vehicle as the vehicle was able to pull more than 1150 lbs.
